The Kenema District Health Management Team (DHMT) was among the few proud DHMTs across the country that recently received Global Awards from Marie Stopes Sierra Leone for Clinical Quality, Family Planning and Post Abortion Care (PAC) Kits, COVID-19 Supplies and Social Mobilization Materials.
The Kenema District Health Management Team is headed by a committed, hard working, visionary and experienced District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr. Donald Grant whose leadership demonstration undeniably contributed to such remarkable and memorable achievement.
His insatiable desire for success cannot be overemphasized, as his love for fellow Sierra Leoneans and the country is immense that is why he has always refused to compromise his integrity for personal interest.
The occasion which was graced by high profiled Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) staff including the Deputy Chief Medical Officer (Clinical) Dr. Bash Taqi and Director of RMNCH Dr. Satie Kenneh was held at Youyi Building, Brookfield’s in Freetown.
According to Dr. Bash Taqi, the deputy Chief Medical Officer – Clinical, “We have enjoyed over 30 years effective collaboration with Marie Stopes. Today, there is an evidence of their achievements right across the country.” He therefore implored other nongovernmental organization partners to follow the footsteps of Marie Stopes in supporting government’s health service deliveries.
Making the presentation, Marie Stopes Sierra Leone Country Director, Dr. Ufuoma Festus Omo-Obi – Country Director Marie Stopes said theorganisation’s mission as aligned with Government’s policy and strategy for health, they have strongly prioritized functional collaboration with the Directorates of Sexual Reproductive Health and policy and planning. He said through their strengthened partnership with all the relevant stockholders they have jointly delivered quality assured SRH services to more women and girls who make up a large proportion of the underserved population.
MSSL Country Director promised the leadership of MoHS and the people of Sierra Leone that, Marie Stopes is ever prepared and will continue to support women and young girls with comprehensive SRH package as per their rights.
“We are delighted to share with you that this public sector support resulted in SRH services being accessed by about 118,227 Clients/Patients in 2019 and Jan 2020— April 2020 36,606 clients\patients in these MoHS CHCs we support, resulting in measurable impact seen by way of the 116,836 and 32,634 Couple Years of Protection (CYPs) generated respectively. An encouraging index from our collaboration in the Public Sector CHCs we support is that 34% of these services benefitted the Adolescent Population. A breakdown of services provided in these sites we support via training and direct service delivery shows about70 Tuba! Ligation surgeries, 2362 IUCDs, 35130 Implants, 31427 Injectable contraceptives, 69468 Oral Contraceptive Pills, 1040 Post Abortion Care, 1968 Emergency Contraception pills and over 1 million condoms have been accessed in these sites with our support and collaboration with MoHS from 2019 to May 2020. Dr. Dr. Ufuoma Festus Omo-Obi said in line with their mission and commitment to do more for women, men, girls and their families in Sierra Leone, they are officially handing over the full bouquet of SRH kits packs which comprises 135 IUCD removal kit packs, 135 IUCD insertion kits packs, 90 implant insertion kits, 90 implant removal kits, 4000 canulae for use in their 90 saving lives II sites, funded by DFID. He added, variety of covid-19 IPC supplies (including gloves and face masks), branded IEC apparels (280T- shirts, caps and wrist bands) are to be used during social mobilization by service providers in 116 CHC sites they support in collaboration with MoHS through DHMTs to boost and compliment government’s continuous efforts in addressing family planning, sexual reproductive health needs and COVID-19 response.
Furthermore, it is pertinent to mention that SRH, family planning and general medical services are available in our newly relocated Clinics in Kenema and Makeni to increase access to healthcare service delivery in those parts of the country. Our traditional 14 Marie Stopes mobile Outreach Clinics are active in the delivery of family planning and SRH services in communities nationwide. The country director insisted that the occasion was an affirmation that SRH services delivered in the public sector are at the best of quality while presenting the awards to DMOs of Kenema, Tonkolili and Port Loko including the five CHCs that obtained the Global Endorsement as Model Sites as per last QTA assessment of three districts; Kenema (Joru CHC and Baoma Koya), Tonkolili (Makali and Mathoir CHCs and Port Loko (Pepel CHC). They were well recognized and appreciated for their standard FP/PAC service provision.
Receiving the awards, the DMOs thanked Marie Stopes for the kind gesture and promised to do more.
