DISHONEST SIERRA LEONEAN YOUTHS AND THE SELF INFLICTED POVERTY

Through entrepreneurship, productive investment, local development, Diasporas have the opportunity to impact the socio-economic landscape in the long term and contribute to job creation in Sierra Leone Sierra Leone represents a low income, predominantly migrant sending ECOWAS countries. Although Sierra Leone is endowed with many valuable natural resources (e.g. diamond, titanium, bauxite and gold), it is among the poorest countries of the world. Poverty remains at 53% of the population living on less than US$ 1.25 a day and unemployment and illiteracy levels remain high, particularly among youth. Youth unemployment was at 70% (2017) The country continues to face daunting challenges of poor infrastructure and widespread rural and urban impoverishment. Are the dishonest youths helping the Situation? Nearly 90 percent of Sierra Leonean diasporas have cried foul in the hands of our very brothers and sisters, who believe dishonesty is the best practice for national building. We have seen cases where our brothers and sisters have destroyed millions of dollars’ worth of businesses, from construction to retail ventures. Ignorance has also played a role in this broad day destruction. Most of them believe, it is an opportunity to enrich themselves against the interest of the Sierra Leonean diasporas, and other believe, Money is very easy to find overseas. These Strange behaviors pointed above have contributed to the massive economic deprivation of Sierra Leone. Here is the solution to such terrible menace. The government of Sierra Leone or private entities, should establish the secretariat for the protection of diaspora businesses and interests. This secretariat should be directly linked to Anti- corruption, Ministry of Justice and the internal affairs, to protect Diasporas that venture in the market. Doing this, will promotes confidence that will improve the employment rate for the very destructive youths. The ministry of youth affairs should also partner with the ACC, to educate youths about the trouble their unwarranted attacks bring to the economy. The diasporas are ready. Let the government create the platform.
