Recruitment for a HSE / Sustainability Officer

Socfin Agricultural Company situated in the Pujehun District in Southern Sierra Leone has developed a large oil palm plantation which has started production recently. With an expanding frame work within the HSE / Sustainability Department, an experience HSE / Sustainability Officer (male or female) is required and should have a thorough understanding of all applicable legal requirements, Occupational health and safety plans and – policies, with ISO14001 and RSPO knowledge being an advantage. The position will have the following responsibilities: 

He/she will be required to execute the following tasks but not limited to:  Writing quarterly Environmental Monitoring Reports (EMR- on the activities of the Company to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA-SL), Sending of EMR in respect with timelines (23rd March, 23rd June, 23rd September, 23rd December) Communicate with the EPA-SL by phone, mails and letters exchanges,  Ensuring compliance to the “Terms and Conditions of the EIA License”,  Identifying and ensuring all recommendations made by the EPA have been communicated and addressed to each department concerned,  Meeting the EPA-SL on annual basis for the EIA Licence renewal,  Ensuring that directives from the HSE/Sustainability Manager are fully implemented respecting deadlines,  Being the focal person during the monitoring audits with the EPA-SL officers,  Supporting meetings and trainings with all stakeholders when needed, Knowing the Company’ activities and their environmental and social impacts with their mitigation measures, Checking the implementation/respect of all the procedure and instructions of the EMS, Ensuring internal audits are carried out to minimize the occurrence of accidents, Supporting monitoring of certain technical aspects of occupational health and safety (OHS) to include air quality, noise levels, heat levels and process safety.

Report and Record accidents and propose mitigation measures Support and implement procedures of ISO 14001 and RSPO principals

Write the quarterly newsletter of the Company; prepare reports and statistics on Environment, Health and Safety topics

Required profile: Minimum 3 year’s practical experience in the industry, Ability to work in a team and to coordinate and prioritize activities, Excellent knowledge of English and good written and communication skills o Excellent computer skills (word, excel, pdf), Able to work under pressure with limited supervision, Autonomous and integrates and must easily adapt to an isolated multicultural environment, Motivation for the work, Awareness on environmental impacts and local mitigation measures is a must o Previous experience on health, safety and environmental management will be a big asset

This position is based on the Plantation in Sahn Malen, Pujehun District and reports directly to the HSE & Sustainability Manager; however the position has close working relations with the General Manager and Heads of Departments.
